Safety Glass: A Guide

It is a legal requirement to install safety glazing in designated critical locations when fitting replacement windows, doors or glass panels.

Building Regulations specify the areas where safety glass, such as toughened or laminated glazing, must be used. These typically include low-level glazing and areas close to doors where there is a higher risk of impact.

The diagram highlights the critical locations where safety glazing is required in both new and replacement installations.

Types of Window Glass for Enhanced Safety:

We have two types of safety glass that can offer additional benefits:

  • Laminated glass
Laminated glass is made from two or more panes bonded together with a durable interlayer, typically polyvinyl butyral (PVB). If broken, the interlayer holds the glass in place, reducing the risk of injury and preventing the pane from falling out. Laminated glass can also provide improved sound insulation compared with standard glazing.

  • Toughened glass
Toughened glass is heat-treated to increase its strength and resistance to impact. It is commonly used in critical locations, such as low-level glazing, doors and areas close to floors. If broken, toughened glass shatters into small, blunt fragments, reducing the likelihood of serious injury.

High-Quality Safety Glass Windows:

We install high-quality safety glazing in line with current Building Regulations, ensuring all required areas are fitted correctly. Whether part of a full window replacement or a single pane, we make sure the appropriate specification is used.

Safety glass is a legal requirement in designated locations for replacement windows, doors and glazed panels. Our team ensures every installation meets these standards, providing compliance and added protection where it is needed.
