Accoya Wood: A Guide

We offer Accoya timber for sash windows and French doors as a high-performance alternative to traditional hardwoods. Accoya is modified for improved durability and stability, helping it resist rot, swelling and movement over time.

This makes it a reliable option for properties where long-term performance is essential. Accoya combines the appearance of natural timber with enhanced resilience, providing windows and doors that maintain their finish and function for years to come.

What is Accoya Wood?

Accoya timber is produced using a wood modification process that enhances sustainably sourced radiata pine. Through a non-toxic acetylation treatment, the timber is modified at a cellular level, permanently improving its natural properties.

This process increases durability, reduces movement caused by moisture and improves resistance to decay and weathering. The result is a stable, long-lasting timber that performs reliably in external joinery applications such as sash windows and doors.

Advantages of Investing in Accoya Doors and Accoya Windows

Accoya timber offers several practical advantages for windows and doors:

  • Dimensional stability
Accoya is highly stable and less affected by moisture changes. This reduces the risk of shrinking, swelling or sticking over time.

  • Resistance to decay
The modification process makes the timber resistant to rot, fungi and insect attack, supporting long-term durability.

  • Sustainably sourced
Accoya is manufactured from responsibly sourced timber and is FSC certified. Its durability also reduces the need for frequent replacement.

  • Long-term performance
Accoya is supplied with a 50-year warranty for above-ground use and 25 years in ground contact, reflecting its durability in external applications.

  • Improved coating performance
Paint and coatings last longer on Accoya due to its stability, helping maintain appearance and reducing maintenance.

  • Weather resistance
It performs well in exposed conditions and is less prone to movement caused by temperature and moisture fluctuations.

Accoya Wood Treatment and Maintenance

Compared with traditional timber, Accoya typically requires less frequent repainting due to its improved stability. This can reduce ongoing maintenance over time.

Routine cleaning with mild detergent and a soft brush will help maintain the finish of your windows and doors. For long-term performance, repainting or re-staining is generally recommended every five to seven years, depending on exposure and the type of coating used.

Because Accoya is more stable, coatings tend to adhere well and last longer, helping maintain appearance and reduce maintenance intervals.
